Inulin Fibres
Powder
- Stimulates the development of beneficial gut bacteria
- Supports the healthy function of the gastrointestinal tract
- Natural prebiotic for improved digestive well-being
The gut microbiome: a central regulator of health
Dysbiosis, which is a shift from overall beneficial towards pathogenic bacterial populations, has direct implications in digestive function, but also in other aspects of our health due to a loss of permeability of the intestinal barrier. Growing scientific evidence points to a major role of the gut microbiome in modulating activity of the immune system. The gut microbiome is also believed to act on other organs, such as the brain, thereby influencing our mood and psychological functions.
Non-digestible, but not useless: benefits of dietary fibres
- Bind water and increase stool bulk and regularity.
- Increase viscosity of the intestinal content and modulate absorption of certain nutrients (lipids, sugars).
- Serve as fermentable substrate, so-called prebiotic, for the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria.
Inulin in weight management
A 2024 meta-analysis by Reimer et al.[7] reviewed 20 randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of chicory-derived inulin-type fructans (ITFs) on weight-related outcomes. Most studies were conducted in overweight, obese, or type 2 diabetic individuals with intervention durations ranging from 4 to 36 weeks. ITF supplementation resulted in significant reductions in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and fat mass compared to placebo. Notably, reductions in body weight were influenced by intervention duration. These effects are thought to be mediated by decreased hunger, enhanced satiety, and modulation of the gut microbiota.
Inulin – a natural dietary fibre
Inulin is dietary fibre found for instance in chicory, topinambur or garlic. It consists mainly of fructose units arranged in polymers that cannot be processed by our digestive enzymes. However, certain beneficial bacteria of our gut microbiome are able to use inulin as an energy source and transform it through fermentation into lactate and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs have anti-inflammatory effects and support the intestinal barrier, as well as immune regulation both locally and throughout the body. They also influence immune responses in other organs such as the liver, lungs, brain, and reproductive tract [1].
